Twas The Friday Favs Before Christmas

Twas The Friday Favs Before Christmas

Happy Friday, all! Here’s what I’m loving this week!

1. I finally decorated last night!

Looks about right…

I decorated my tree while watching Maddow (because of course I did), and then thankfully snapped a few pics. Oooh, foreshadowing!)

Bet you’re totally jealous that your house doesn’t have a 60s style faux rock wall!

Nothing says Christmas like Jessica Rabbit!

I left the tree plugged in, and was happily curled up in bed with the new Paul Theroux book when I heard the crash.

That “war on Christmas” you keep hearing about? Turns out it’s my kitten, Rachel. Everything survived except my beloved Disney World ornament. The castle is fine, but the bulb is in a zillion pieces in my trash. RIP, ornament!

2. While poking around for something to watch last night, I discovered that my cable provider has season 2 of Daria available on demand!

It’s crazy how well I remember some of these episodes, given how old they are.

3. My beloved seasonal Sugar Cookie Pop Tarts are back!

4. THESE SOCKS! Just ordered them as my Christmas present to myself. $5 well spent.

5. As soon as I finish this post, I’m running out to mail my gifts from Jordyn’s Blogger Secret Santa exchange. I had so much fun shopping for my person, hope she loves everything! And of course I’m super curious to see what kind of presents I get, too!

Oh, internet. Thank you for glorious art like this.

1. It’s my birthday! WOOHOO! I’ll just copy what I posted to Facebook, because it’s my birthday and I can get away with being lazy.

2. I met this chameleon at PetSmart the other day and fell in love. I seriously stood there watching him do his weird version of The Robot/that “mime in a box” thing for a good 10 minutes. I think he’s my soulmate.

3. Serial is back! How crazy is it that I just blogged about finally listening to season 1 last week, and then season 2 started this week? (Thanks so much to Meg of My Monochromatic Life for telling me about the Undisclosed podcast in the comments last week, btw! I’m only up to episode 9, but there have been so many “OMG, this changes everything!” moments!)

4. I couldn’t resist stopping to have my cards read while I was browsing the awesome nerdy/new-agey bookstore in Springfield this week. I’m not sure how much I believe in this kind of thing in general, but almost every card that came up had something to do with being in transition between an old life and new, which is *exactly* where I am stuck. I’m so ready to let go of where I am now and move back to Florida and start fresh, but getting the timing right seems to be a thing.

Real or not, the woman doing the reading said pretty much exactly what I needed to hear right now.

between-worlds-card

But, like.. for realsies, I got this exact card.

5. On a search for ugly Christmas sweaters, I came across this one by Blizzard Bay, and um, hello, not only is it not ugly, but a) it’s freaking adorable and b) the bird’s little skis (ice skates?) LIGHT UP. I need this in my life ASAP. C’mon, Santa! I’ve been… well, decent this year!

Show Us Your Books – December 2015

Show Us Your Books – December 2015

Holy cow, it’s the last Show Us Your Books linkup for 2015, and the first one on my new blog! Endings and beginnings. It’s like the circle of life, you guys.

titus

Today I’m posting about books that I read in October & November, since I was all busy and important at the beginning of last month and missed the linkup! Each book has links to its amazon page, because hello, I am very poor and need those 42 cents I get if you buy the book. I should design a t-shirt that says “I Blog So My Cats Can Have A Better Life”.

Girl on the Train

From Goodreads: Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?

I don’t read that much fiction, but this book made me feel like I need to pick up well-written mystery/thriller genre books more often! Slowly learning more about the narrator in the first couple of chapters reminded me of that concept where we all tend to assume that the main character is just like us until we learn otherwise. It’s hard to write much about without getting all spoilery, but I will say that the author did a great job of getting you to suspect multiple characters of being guilty, as well as throwing in unexpected twists that still felt plausible. It’s the kind of book that you want to go back and reread after you finish and know what happened. Fans of Gone Girl will probably dig this one, too.

Paper Towns

From GoodreadsQuentin Jacobsen has spent a lifetime loving the magnificently adventurous Margo Roth Spiegelman from afar. So when she cracks open a window and climbs into his life—dressed like a ninja and summoning him for an ingenious campaign of revenge—he follows. After their all-nighter ends, and a new day breaks, Q arrives at school to discover that Margo, always an enigma, has now become a mystery. But Q soon learns that there are clues—and they’re for him.

This was my first John Green book (I know….) and I mostly picked it up because I heard it was set in Orlando. And for me, that ended up being the best part of the book. The city is so present in almost every chapter – They reference actual streets and places and there’s even a mention of a 7-11 downtown that immediately brought the mental image up of the one I’ve stopped at countless times after seeing a local band play. Every little nod to Publix or Colonial Drive made me happy.

Ready for unpopular opinion time? While I thought that the characters were pretty well crafted and the story was good, I wasn’t a big fan of the actual writing. Does that make me a horrible person deserving to be outcast from society?

The movie, btw? Ugh. The book was written in such a cinematic format that I could imagine exactly how scenes would look as a movie, but they blew it. They left out scenes that would have been fantastic on screen and changed quite a few story aspects that in turn changed up the characters’ motivations and the meaning behind choices they make. Stick with the book.

How the World Sees You

This book ended up being quite different from what I expected, but still pretty interesting. The book has a code to send you to the author’s site to take a personality test that tells you what your “advantages” (aka strengths) are, so that you ca learn who to work these qualities to your advantage to stand out. You’re then assigned an archetype depending on your top two advantages. Here’s mine, based on top advantages of Innovation & Passion :

rockstar

About half of the book is dedicated to chapters explaining each of the 49 archetypes – how they operate, their strengths, how to work with them, etc. To be honest, I ended up skipping over a lot of that. Reading about the ones related to me was interesting, but since I work alone and don’t have to worry about managing employees of different types, I didn’t feel like I was getting all that much by reading about all of the others. (And honestly, I knew I wasn’t going to remember most of it.) I can see how knowing how to approach different personalities and who to pair up for a project would be super useful if you were in charge of a team, department. etc, though.

Psychopath Test Book Reviews

 The Psychopath Test

I love psychology, so I found this book fascinating. “Psychopath” is a term that gets tossed around a lot, but how many people really know exactly what it means? It turns out that there are 20 characteristics that true psychopaths usually display – things like an inflated sense of self-worth, lack of empathy, superficial charm, and lack of remorse. Although we most often hear about the serial killer kind of psychopath (which definitely does exist), they’re much more commonly just members of the general population, and interestingly make up a large portion of the highest ranking business leaders. Turns out that a lot of those same characteristics that define you as a psychopath also turn out to be really handy for getting ahead in business.

The obvious problem with this kind of book is that you can’t help starting to try to diagnose people. I’m not gonna name any names, but once you notice that pretty much all of the factors apply to a certain person running for office (we’ll call them Bonald Bump), it’s impossible to un-see.

Skip this last bit if you want zero spoilers! But if you don’t care, I wanted to share a part that I found fascinating. Psychopaths don’t generally experience the “normal” range of human emotions, but they are often known to study how others react to situations and mimic those facial expressions. (“Okay, when Bob said he was angry, his eyebrows squished together and his mouth turned down.” So the observer will try to copy those movements in a situation where they think it’s appropriate.) The line that stuck with me most? A test was conducted where psychopaths were shown images of people’s faces that portrayed various emotions. When shown a face displaying fear one test subject responded, “I have no idea what emotion that is, I just know it’s the face people make when I kill them.” EEP.

Married Sex Book Reviews

Married Sex

A friend posted a glowing review of this book on Facebook, so I checked Netgalley and was happy to see I could grab it free in exchange for a review! It’s not my usual style of book, but I did find it hard to put down.

From Goodreads: When a husband convinces his wife to join him in a tryst with another woman, there are unintended consequences in this sharply observed erotic tale about the challenges of modern marriage.

Wile this book obviously contains “the sex” (which is thankfully well-written), the focus is much more on the relationships between the characters, and how events change up those dynamics. It’s an interesting look at how complicated even happy marriages can be. I also found having a male narrator’s point of view refreshing, since so many relationship-themed books tend to default to the woman’s voice. I wouldn’t personally call this a must-read, but I did enjoy it and it would make a satisfying beach (or snow day!) read.

I’m currently reading The Woman I Wanted to Be and Everybody Writes: Your Go-To Guide to Creating Ridiculously Good Content, so look for reviews of those next month.

Friday Favs – It’s December!

Friday Favs – It’s December!

friday-cats

I can’t believe it’s December! Hooray for my birthday month! Here are my favs for this week:

Serial Podcast

1. I know that I’m like a year behind the rest of the world, but I finally listened to Serial podcast over the past few days and am now reading through all of the updates that have happened since it ended on their site. SO ADDICTING! I need some people to discuss theories with ASAP!

2. My local thrift shop has a bag sale at the beginning of every month, and I scored some fantastic stuff this time! I got like fifty-something items for $5. Included with that was a charcoal colored Old Navy fleece vest, two purses that I’d best describe as kinda Southwestern-style?, a really unique wooden beaded bag, a cute Banana Republic top, and a whole lot of clothing items that I’m going to want to alter before wearing. (My to-sew pile is OUT OF CONTROL.) Do you guys want some kind of thrift store haul post? Just lmk if you’re interested!

3. I can’t even remember how I came across these nausea bands on Twitter (Twitter is a black hole for me in the same way that Wikipedia is for most people. You know how you look up one thing and next thing you know it’s 4 am and you’re reading about the life cycle of the honeybee or the history of Argentina something?) Anyway, I contacted the company (No Mo Nausea) ASAP because nausea is something I deal with way too frequently, and they were kind enough to send me some free bands to try! (This was way back in June, btw! I wanted to have plenty of experience before I shared!)
no-mo nausea

They look a lot like those rubbery wristbands that you wear to support various causes, but they have a little rubbery bump designed to hit the acupressure point on your wrist that helps with nausea. They’re also lightly peppermint scented, since peppermint is a popular aromatherapy for upset stomach.

anti-nausea wristbands

I’ve been using these on and off since June, and they really do work! I’ve tried to make a point of slipping one on when I first start feeling icky, and that usually helps it fade away pretty quickly. The bands last quite a while, too. I think the first one I use made it about 3-4 months before it got weak from frequently being stretched over my big wrists and finally snapped. They’re definitely worth a try at $12 for a pack of 2 if you’re prone to nausea, are going through morning sickness, etc and want a natural remedy. (And nope, they’re not paying me to post about them or anything!)

4. It’s been 3 weeks since I announced this new blog, and I’m pretty excited that it already has almost 1400 page views! I know that’s a slow *day* (let alone several weeks!) for a lot of bloggers, but given that I haven’t had a ton of time to devote to it yet, I’m pretty pleased!

5. I joined in Jordyn’s Blogger Secret Santa this year, and I’m having a blast shopping for my recipient! (What’s the term for that? My gift getter?) The awesome thing about it being all bloggers is that we can totally put our social media stalking skills to good use for once to figure out what to buy!

As a final note, I am SO close to hitting 500 followers on Pintertest! I’d love if you’d visit my boards and consider following any (or all) that you like!

Friday Favs

Friday Favs

friday-favs

Happy Black Friday, everyone! Congrats on surviving Thanksgiving! It’s my first Friday Favs post here at the new blog – Yay!

1- It is physically impossible to watch this less than a million times. (Be sure your volume is on.)

2. I got an email coupon for 40% off one item at Michaels, so I decided to stop by and pick up a new coloring book. (Hooray, adulthood!) Of course, after like 15 minutes of flipping through every one they carry to pick out the very best one, I found out that you can’t use coupons on books there. How silly is that? I bought it anyway (It’s this one from the Leisure Arts Color Art series!)

adult coloring book page
I loved pretty much all of the books from that series, so now I’m trying to resist buying several more on Amazon!  (Okay, immediately after typing this I ordered the Jungle Wonders one, too. Amazon has a promo for 30% off one book today, so it was only $4.19!)

3. Speaking of coloring, my favorite thing this week has been watching my evening news shows with a coloring book and a drink. Not sure what this says about my maturity level?

Coloring, vodka, an Chris Hayes

Mimosa flavored Pinnacle vodka is delicious, btw.

4. I survived Thanksgiving dinner with my mom, 3 sisters, 3 nieces, one nephew in law (is that a thing?) and 2 of my nieces’ kids. (Great nephews? Clearly I have no idea how families work.) It involved multiple breaks for quiet time with kittens and wine, but nobody killed anyone and only one adult cried, so I’d say it was a pretty solid holiday!

5. Has the sky just been crazy cool where you live lately, too? I’ve been obsessed with clouds and sunsets!

Oh, and one bonus favorite…

matt-mc

Swoon!

And just in case you missed it, I have a giveaway going on for a super cute black & white cat print scarf!
