1. Two words: Bernie. Sandwiches.

If you follow my main Twitter account, you now that I’m like a hormone crazed teenager when it comes to my Chris Hayes crush. Hayes = Bae. Anyway, I was watching the NH primary coverage when…

bernie-sandwiches

Yup. He totally said Bernie Sandwiches.

Apparently it’s been a thing on Colbert, Fallon, and @Midnight since then. My imaginary boyfriend is super famous now!

2. I’m so happy that How To Get Away With Murder is back! Last night’s episode was confusing, but oh man do I enjoy looking at Charlie Weber & Matt McGory!

Speaking of murder…

3. ADNAN SYED’S PCH HEARING!

I love that both Serial and Undisclosed have done updates about each day of the hearing. It blows my mind that he has been in prison since the year I graduated high school. I can’t even imagine what that would be like, nor can I imagine how crazy it would be for him if he actually gets a new trial and gets released – not only being free for the first time since he was basically a child, but having that freedom come with a pretty major level of fame.

I have to admit that I’m SO hoping for a new trial not just because I lean towards his innocence, but because I think it would be riveting to follow!

4. My Cloudy Cat finally got his drain out on Weds! That poor little fluffball is so OVER vet trips! Since he spent most of his last visit hiding inside my sweatshirt, I decided to take his towel out of the kitty carrier this time so he could snuggle it in between being poked and prodded. It ended up working out really well! He got to feel safe AND look like he was auditioning for the next Star Wars movie.

5. I’m going riding again today!

I originally scheduled my 2nd lesson at the new stable for today because it was supposed to be like 57 degrees, but now it’s going to be a whopping 45. Oh well, HORSIES! I carried my phone in my jacket pocket last time but was too wrapped up in what I was doing to take any pics, so hopefully I’ll do better this time and have pretty pictures to post tomorrow.

And yes, I really am posting this at 5:30 in the freaking morning. The cats woke me up around 4 and I have to be up at 7:45 to get ready to go ride, so it looks like I’m just staying up at this point. Oh well, who needs sleep?

Fabulous Friday linkup time!

Show Us Your Books – February

Show Us Your Books – February

It’s time for the monthly Show Us Your Books linkup with Life According to Steph and Jana Says!

show-us-your-books-2016-300by300

Clicking on book cover images will take you to that book’s Amazon page via fancy schmancy affiliate links, which means that if you end up buying the book I get approximately enough commission to buy half a can of cat food. Hooray!

A side note/cry for help before we dive into this this month’s books: If any of you can help me figure out what’s messing up the spacing and fonts and everything else on my sidebar, I will be your BFF and braid your hair and bake you cookies. There are just so many problems going on over there! It’s supposed to be all nice and neat and pretty, but…LOLNOPE!

Anyway… BOOKS! I read some!

Clear Your Clutter With Feng Shui – Revised & Updated Edition by Karen Kingston

I’ve heard about this book several times, so when I saw the new updated version avialable for review from Blogging for Books, I jumped on the chance to check it out. The original book was published in 1998 and became a classic, not to mention a best seller. The book I got is the 3rd edition, which has been updated and expanded. It’s a quick read at just under 200 pages in a book that’s only about 6 x 8″.

The main ideas behind it are quite a bit less “woo-woo” than “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up”; there’s no talking to your items and thanking them for their work, for example. It’s also a lot less detail-oriented – no order to tackle things, specific ways to fold an organize, and so on. She even says it’s ok to have a junk drawer, as long as it’s small and cleaned out regularly. I feel like this little paragraph sums up the book’s basic ideas well:

clear your clutter with feng shui

She breaks the definition of “clutter” down into 4 categories – things you don’t use and love, things that are untidy or disorganized, too many things in a small space, and “anything unfinished”. I immediately knew that last category was my biggest problem. I’m THE WORST at starting projects and not finishing them, which is bad enough, but if I just glance up from where I’m sitting, I see laundry that needs to be done, books that I’ve been wanting to read, mail that needs to be sent, a giraffe statue whose ear needs glued back on, products I want to review, a dress that needs to be altered… etc. And while we mostly just sort of ignore that stuff on a daily basis, on a subconscious level, all of those “Oh, crap, I need to take care of that” thoughts add up and drag you down. She suggests that you look at the things that surround you and ask yourself what they symbolize to you and how they make you feel. Does that framed vacation photo make you feel warm fuzzies, or bring up memories of the big fight you and your spouse got into on that trip? Items that make you feel guilty, sad, remind you of an ex, etc, should most likely go.

The last few chapters of the book leave behind the basic idea of a neater house and delve into things like cleansing your body, mental and emotional clutter, etc. Those might be a bit too new-agey for some people just looking for tips on a neater home, but you can take them or leave them depending on your interest level.

I hate to keep comparing this book to “Life Changing Magic…” but it’s such an easy reference point since the topics are similar and most of you have probably read it by now. I have to admit that while I found the philosophy of this book more practical and it definitely inspired to shake up the stagnant energy that having clutter sitting around is probably causing in my house, it didn’t inspire me to instant action in the same way that the “Life Changing Magic…” book did. I think both books have their merits, so if the Kon Marie method wasn’t quite your thing, I’d definitely suggest giving this one a try for a different perspective.

Deep South by Paul Theroux

As a big travel nerd, I’ve probably read at least 70% of the books in the travel section of any given library or bookstore. If you’re like me and hang out in the ol’ 900’s aisles of non-fiction, it’s almost impossible not to be familiar with Paul Theroux, who has written a whole host of books about his travels, as well as edited plenty of collections like those “Best American Travel Writing, Whatever year” books. I doubt he’s everyone’s cup of tea – his books tend to be long and detailed, full of history, and although they have funny moments they’re not exactly laugh a minute comedies. Still, Paul is the guy that taught me that the UK is shaped like a witch riding a pig, and I hold a lot of affection for him. When this book popped up on NetGalley (where I got it free in exchange for an honest review, like all the cool kids tend to do these days), I did a little dance of joy and requested it ASAP. It has taken me a couple of months to get through (mostly because I read like 5 different books at once, partly because it’s the kind of book that just takes time and is about 400 pages long.), but I finally finished this morning just in time for my review post!

As you might guess from the title, this one is about Theroux’s travels in the American South. I grew up in southwest Missouri, which is kinda south, but I’m hoping to do more traveling in the “real” south soon, since I’ve mostly just driven through when moving to Florida and back. There’s a lot to talk about when it comes to the deep south of this book (which mostly features the Mississippi Delta area, land of amazing blues music), and I’m still not totally sure how I feel about the author’s take on it. I might be tumbling some of it around in my head for a while, but that’s a good thing.

One of the first points in this book that struck me was the idea about how there are two different “Souths” – the southern Gone with the Wind plantations, sweet tea, magnolia blossoms, Hart of Dixie south you think of (probably) most often when picturing the area, but also the rural, very poor south, which is where Theroux does most of his exploring in this book. When he brought up the concept of two different definitions of the South, I immediately thought of Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside resort, which is divided into huge southern plantation mansion style buildings in Magnolia Bend, and Aligator Bayou, which is much more rustic and swampy. (Sorry, guys, I worked at Disney World for 3 years. These are my points of reference for life.) He mentions frequently that the poverty he sees in these forgotten parts of the South are on par with what he’s seen traveling in third world countries, and yet while the US sends billions of dollars in aide to help those in need across the globe (as we should), hardly any funds go to those living in conditions just as poor here at home.

Most of the chapters are quite short, to the point that it’s almost more like a long series of short essays or quick scenes than a continuous narrative. Unlike most travel books which cover a single visit to a place, Theroux ended up making four trips – one during each season, often revisiting places and getting to see how they have changed (or stayed the same) since his last theme there a few months before.

This book felt so much different from Theroux’s other works, since instead of far-off islands or exotic-sounding destinations halfway around the globe, he’s writing about (almost literally) places practically in my own back yard. (The last section of the book s spent traveling through Arkansas, and I live like 10 minutes from the Arkansas state line.)

If you followed my old blog, you might remember that I blogged about that exact billboard a couple of years ago when I drove through Arkansas on my way to New Orleans!

Given the book’s setting, race is obviously a huge theme. I found it especially interesting to read about the history given the charged feelings over recent events like Ferguson, Tamir Rice, and the whole Black Lives Matter movement.

till1 till2

Note – I felt super guilty that I had this book for several months before I got around to reviewing it, but I just realized when grabbing the cover image that no, it wasn’t published in October 2015, it WILL BE published in October 2016! Oops? At least I’m really early with a review for once!

The Sinner’s Grand Tour by Tony Perrottet

I spotted this book at the library while browsing the travel books and couldn’t resist. Travel AND racy history? SOLD! Im so glad that I stumbled upon it, because it was definitely a fun read. The author travels around Europe (wife and kids in tow) to visit some of history’s more scandalous sites, like Cassanova’s favorite parts of Venice, the Marquis de Sade’s old home and dungeons, and even the secret bathroom in the Vatican covered in erotic paintings by Raphael.

While this probably isn’t your kind of book if something like the word “penis” makes you blush, it’s really not that provocative at all. There are definitely amusing and interesting stories, but nothing gets TOO graphic. That said, I absolutely have to share this photo from the book – it’s a sketch of the plans for the sex chair that King Edward VII designed to be built for him when he got too fat for sexytimes with the ladies without crushing them.

berties-sex-chair

I especially like the top hat.

(Keeping the image small in case your terribly wide-eyed and innocent kid walks through the room, but you can click to delight in the silliness of the larger version.)

Thumbs up for this one if you like history, especially the less conventional stuff that you don’t find in the guidebooks. (I started a biography of Edward VII, aka Bertie, last year but haven’t gotten around to finish it. I wonder now if the author will mention his fancy Chair-o-fun?)

I’d love to hear what you’re reading lately, and don’t forget to check out the Show Us Your Books link-up at the top of this post to see what other bloggers have been loving (or throwing across the room) this month!

YayFriday

Happy Friday, everyone! Here’s what I’ve been loving this week:

  1. My BFF/#girlcrush Rachel Maddow hosting last night’s #DemDebate!!!

rachel-excited

rachel-woo

Things got pretty intense! There are a few topics that I wish had been covered in more depth (or at all), but overall I liked the approach of the moderators mostly staying out of it and just letting the candidates go.

In case you were unaware, Rachel & I are totes BFFs. See?

rachel-tweetShe has also RT’d pics of my cat, which is basically a marriage proposal in my book.

2. I’m currently kinda obsessed with “Child Genius” on Lifetime. I had a super high IQ as a kid, but I’m still blown away by how crazy smart these kids are at like 10-12 years old. For the memory round, they had to memorize the order of a shuffled deck of cards, and one of them actually remembered all 52! I consider myself pretty good at geography (I kick ass at Sporcle’s “name all of the countries of the world” game and I can usually get 120-130 of the capitals correct, and while I’m not super accurate I can generally at least get pretty close to estimating where they are on a map), so I was surprised that I only knew like half the questions they asked the kids, like “What is the national currency in Azerbaijan?” I totally want Adrian, who is going to graduate high school at 12 next year, to win, since as he puts it – he has a single mom and the tuition at Harvard is “kind of expensive.” (The prize is $100k for college.)

3. I was sooooo excited to see this dress at Target earlier this week!

target-paisley

Target Women's Tiered Babydoll Dress - Mossimo Supply Co.

It’s basically the exact same dress that I loved last summer, just in three new colors/patterns. I have last year’s version in two different colors, and wore it constantly. I am obsessed with cute summery dresses that you can just throw on and feel effortlessly cute!

Embedded image permalink

Last year’s dress paired with denim vest.

The new ones are only $22 (same as last year’s, I think?) but I have “the poor”, so I’m holding off buying until there’s a good sale or Cartwheel deal. C’mon, BOGO!

4. I recently started a new thing of doing”Office Hours” a few times a week. Basically, I pack up the laptop and head to the library (or hopefully other locations soon if I can find somewhere else that works!) so I can totally focus on work for an hour or two.

Embedded image permalink

Change of scenery!

I love working from home, but getting totally away from any possible distractions for a while makes it WAY easier to focus, and is actually giving me a divide between work and non-work time that’s a lot more clear.

5. And finally, I like this a lot:

I have SO much to catch up on writing about, including a post that I started back in December and 2 from AUGUST! Maybe I can knock a few of those posts out of the draft folder this weekend! Next week includes Cloudy Cat finally getting his tube out on Monday (Hooray for cats without holes in them!) and my 2nd riding lesson at the stable I just started going to after a TEN year break from riding! (Spoiler alert: I suck now! But I can’t wait to tell you guys about it!)

January Yoga Challenge: Update & What I’ve Learned So Far

January Yoga Challenge: Update & What I’ve Learned So Far

So… can I have a do-over?

My plans to do yoga every day in January went REALLY well… for the first four days. Then I got totally taken out by the Headache of Doom for a couple of days, and things kinda went downhill from there. (In case you’re curious, January involved that crazy tension headache/possible migraine, a 2 day vomiting spree, 2 dentist appointments to get teeth extracted, and 3 trips to the vet to fix up 2 very sick cats. Oh, and my phone died and had to be replaced. Not the best start to a year I’ve ever had!)

As you can probably guess, once I got off track, getting back on felt next to impossible. It’s a total shame, too, since extra yoga was probably exactly what I needed during such a crazy month! I did learn a few things from my epic fail, though, so I’m ready to try again this month!

What I’ve Learned:

  • Putting my yoga practice off until nighttime does NOT work for me. I need to make sure to do it either in the morning or early afternoon, or I either get too wrapped up in what I’m working on or too flippin’ tired to drag myself to the mat.
  • I work better with a plan than winging what I’ll do each day. I stuck with it so much better last year when I did Gaia’s yoga guide than when I had to pick something each day. I’ve made myself a list of videos that I want to do throughout Feb, with a mix of easy and harder practices so I can choose from whichever category I’m feeling that day. I think that having some freedom to pick from around a dozen choices will work for me, since it means a little bit of choice, but not 20 minutes spent scrolling through every video ever trying to decide!
  • I also need a backup plan. I’d planned to use the Gaia app on my Kindle Fire for most of m practices, since it’s way easier to see than my little iPhone screen, but doesn’t have the lag that my poor overworked laptop tends to have. (And it’s a law – the video will ALWAYS freeze up just when you’re in an impossible to hold position!) However, right after I renewed my account, the app stopped letting me log in and it took almost all month to get a repl from customer service, who told me that when they changed their name from Gaiam TV, they temporarily eliminated the Kindle app. Uhh, thanks for the heads-up? I usually love them because their subscription price is reasonable and they have such a huge selection of videos, but this was a pretty big fail. I still have my subscription for Feb, so I’ll be doing my best with just the laptop to view them on!

Anyway, I just wanted to share, since the learning process is rarely pretty and we tend to only hear about people’s successes when it comes to building new habits. Hopefully February’s Yoga Challenge Updates will be much more successful!

Friday Favorites – Silver Linings

Friday Favorites – Silver Linings

hello weekend

Happy Halfway Through January! I don’t know about you guys, but 2016 has been ROUGH for me so far! Maybe I’m just getting all of this year’s bad stuff out of the way in the first few weeks? Let’s hope!

Since this has been such a rough week, several of my “favorites” are basically just looking on the bright side of crappy things that have happened, but at least it’s something!

1. This post is late going up today because I had to take Puck to the vet. Nope, not Cloudy who went to the vet last week… different cat. He has something owwie going on with his mouth – I was SO sure it was an abscessed tooth, but they all look ok, so it’s a mystery! He doesn’t want to eat or drink, though, so since the vet office is closed all weekend, I got to learn how to give him subcutaneous fluids myself!

You know when you go to the hospital and get an IV attached to a big ol’ bag to rehydrate you? (Uh, might just be me that has too much experience with that…) Anyway, that’s what they sent me home with!

veterinary-lactated-ringers-cats

I asked them to let me do it myself at the vet’s office so that my first time would be under supervision. I LOVE medical stuff, especially vet medicine, so learning how to do it was awesome! Sticking my poor sick kitty with a ginormous needle and keeping that in place with one hand while squeezing the fluid bag with the other is going to be a challenge for the next few days, but I love adding a skill to my “Oh, I totally know how to do that!” list!

(He also got antibiotics and pain meds and goes back on Weds for a check-up! I managed to move Cloudy’s follow-up appointment to the same time so we can do both at once. CAT LADY BUSY WEEK!)

iphone-5s-gray

2. My phone has been acting up lately, but on Weds it just totally gave up on the world and quit. I don’t blame ya, phone, with Bowie AND Alan Rickman gone, the planet is pretty lame now.

Anyway, I pulled up my carrier’s site (I do no contract through Virgin Mobile because it’s cheap and I’m poor) and my choices were basically a) $30 piece of crap b) $99 decent looking phone c) $893247629876 iPhone 6 or d) $150 iPhone 5s. I decided to spend the extra $50 to get the older iPhone over the meh $99 Phone of Okayness. I’ve never had an iPhone before, so even though it’s sooooo last year, I’m feeling pretty fancy! Did I make the right choice picking the grey over silver? Do I have to get a boyfriend with a beard now? How does this whole Apple thing work??

3. Okay, an actual awesome thing: EMMA WATSON FAVORITED MY TWEET!

em-fav

I’m Hermione Approved! Her bookclub is on Goodreads if you want to join, too!

4. Okay, this is more of an awesome thing for you guys than for me, but Target has one of my favorite dresses EVER on clearance for like $8!

Embedded image permalink

5. Let’s end on a high note with this photo of three things I love dearly: My kitten, my goooorgeous cobalt blue bag from my November Stitch Fix (I really will get around to that review soon!) and my super rad Notorious RBG biography that I can’t wait to dive into!

I SO hope your week has been better than mine! (I also had to get a tooth extracted on Weds. FUN WEEK HAS BEEN FUN!) Here’s hoping for a way cooler post next Friday, full of things that are all happiness and rainbows and unicorns!

Linkup time!
