Friday Favs for the 13th!

Friday Favs for the 13th!

friday-13-lucky

Didn’t we just have a Friday the 13th a few months ago? I distinctly remember making a cute little graphic for that week’s Friday Favs!

Before we dive into this week’s list of five, I have a question for you guys! Does anyone remember the Target Tuesdays linkup that was a thing a few years ago on Fabulous But Evil? I noticed that my Friday Favs posts almost always contain recent Target loves, so I was curious if any of you would be interested in starting up a Target Tuesdays linkup again! Let me know if it’s something you’d be into! And speaking of Targs…

1. I stopped in Target for basically no reason after riding yesterday evening. (It was like 74 degrees, I had to get my butt on a horse!) It was one of those days when ALL THE THINGS were on sale and I needed them all. I picked up a spare pair of my beloved “Socktopus” socks that I’ve mentioned here before…

IMG_1636

Sorry, Mr. Octopus! I have calves.

All of the adorable socks from that brand were marked down from $4 to $2, and there’s a deal on Cartwheel for an extra 20% off certain women’s clearance items, so they were $1.58!  (And yes, I totally own the nightshirt that matches these socks. It’s sooo soft and stretchy and comfy!)

legwarmers

2. I also got the leg warmers I’ve had my eye on since winter! I love them but couldn’t bring myself to spend $10 on them. $1.98 with the Cartwheel discount, though? SOLD! I was worried they might be scratchy since they have sequins, but they’re so soft and comfy and warm! I might pick up the black or pink ones, too, now that I know how great they are.

3. I got TWO of these crazy vintage 70s rompers at a thrift store sale earlier this month. (Other one is same print, different colors.) Now I just need the courage to wear them! 😉

4. This Beezie Madden gif:

beezie

She’s so awesome, she’s been a badass in showjumping since I was a kid! If you can’t tell, her horse takes off an entire stride too soon here, but she’s just like “Whatevs.”

5. It has FINALLY been warm enough to switch from wintery clothes to dresses!

dress-weather

Yes, I totally took that pic in a Walmart. I was just so excited to not be in layers or barn clothes for once! (Dress is from Stitch Fix. I really need to get around to writing a review of the Fix it came in!)

That’s it for me this week! I have a dentist appointment this afternoon (wheeee), but hopefully the actual weekend will be fun!

Friday Favs – Where did April Go?

Friday Favs – Where did April Go?

HOW is it already May? April seems like it flew by, and I’ve hardly blogged at all in the past month! Eep! Let’s catch up a little with some Friday Favs!

fry-day

1. My absolute #1 favorite thing this on this week’s list? The strangers who brought me gas when I was stranded at the side of the road last week.

I was on my way to ride horses with a friend. I’d been too tired after my ride that morning (Yeah, busy day!) to stop for gas on the way home, so I’d already gone pretty far with the gas light on. I’d planned to stop at the closest gas station to my house, but I guess I was totally lost in thought and zipped right past it, as well as past the next one. OOPS. I had the “OMG, I forgot to get gas!” realization about 30 seconds before my car decided that accelerating was no no longer a thing it did. I’m pretty sure I actually swore out loud when I glanced down and saw that I’d driven 60 miles with the gas light on (I know it can usually go about 50 after the low fuel message comes up), and then yelled “NOOOOOOOOOO” as I slowly eased off the road.

no-gas

My view for a really long time.

Long story short, I stood out by the road holding my notebook, on which I’d scribbled “GAS?” in marker… for about 30 seconds. I was right by the Branson theme park Silver Dollar City, so there was quite a bit of traffic, but the whole “stranger danger” thing was just too freaky so I gave up on that plan pretty fast! Got back in my car, eventually got in touch with a roadside service place, and had been waiting for them for about 10 minutes when some random people pulled up and asked if I still needed gas. I told them I had someone on the way, and they replied that they’d run up to the gas station and had a couple of gallons for me. WHAAAT? They figured I wouldn’t want to ride with them, so they decided to just grab a container of gas and bring it to me if I was still there when they got back. SO NICE! I tried to give them the few dollars of actual cash I had in my purse, but they refused. How awesome are those people??

2. The awesome folks at Chewy.com sent my cats a box full of Natural Balance Delectable Delights cat food! Every time I see this food in a pet supply store, I giggle over the super cute names for the flavors. (like Catatouille!) We got the Land ‘n Sea Cats-serole, which is a tuna and chicken flavor combo. My cats love when they get to “review” food and treats!

“This looks like it’s probably for me.”

I tried to get a pic of Tennyson eating, but black cats are so freaking hard to photograph that he had almost all of his food gone by the time I got a decent pic! This food was a big hit with all of the cats, even though they tend to prefer chunky foods to pate. I definitely need to pick up some of the other flavors for them to try!

3. I’m such a nerd – I’m SUPER excited about my new matching hoofpick and brush. I love buying horse grooming supplies, because a) I use them a lot and b) they’re generally pretty cheap, so I can get something new and fun that’s not a bazillion dollar saddle or something. I think I spent about 10 bucks to get both of these from Amazon, and they’ll last for ages!

brush-hoofpick

I’ve only used them once so far, but I’m in love. The curve of the pick is just right for getting all the funky stuff out of a horse’s hooves, and the brush is acutally designed to bend around curves, so you can brush areas like legs SO much better! Grooming horses just plain makes me happy. I can easily get lost in what I’m doing and spend close to an hour brushing a horse before I realize I’m supposed to be riding!

4. Remember the “Coffee is my BFF” sweatshirt/shorts combo I got at Target a while back?

Target Snooze Button coffee is my bff sleepwear set

It’s technically sleepwear, but I’ve worn the top as a regular shirt a few times. You guys – I get comments/compliments on it EVERY time! I hardly ever get comments on what I’m wearing, but for some reason people can’t resist saying something about this top. And of course I admit that it’s from the Target PJ section, like a big dork. I think I’m going to order the cute mint green “Late Nights, Black Coffee” set from the same brand! Under $18 for a comfy top & shorts is so worth it!

Oh, fine, I’m sticking it in my Target cart now. (AHH! Just discovered there’s also a “Coffee is my BFF” t-shirt and shorts set when I searched for the one I wanted. I think I still like mine more, but this one is pretty cute!)

5. I found this song randomly on Spotify and have listened to it countless times this week!

Hope you all have an awesome weekend! I’ll be assisting with a horse camp at Webb Riding Academy tomorrow; 5 hours of teaching 8-12 year olds about horses! I’ll fill you guys in on how it goes on Monday! And the Show Us Your Books linkup is coming up on Tuesday! Yay!

Linking up with some other rad bloggers for Friday awesomeness!

Show Us Your Books – April

Show Us Your Books – April

It’s the 2nd Tuesday of the month, which means we’re talking books today! I’ve been absurdly busy lately so only have 3 to discuss today, but they’re three good ones! (And not surprisingly, all nonfiction. Again. At least they’re not all super depressing this time? Just like… 1.5 of them.)

Pro tip: Clicking on any of the book cover images will take you to that book’s Amazon page via my super snazzy affiliate link. If you then proceed to buy stuff, I will be showered in cash and prizes. Or approximately enough pennies to buy some gum. Close enough.

Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson

Okay, I’m going to sound like a total hipster here, but I was a fan of Jenny Lawson, aka The Bloggess, way before she was “famous”. Like… I remember when her daughter was 5. (I have no idea how long ago that was, but she’s looking almost teenagery now?) I liked her first book, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, but I loved this one. While her first book was a memoir of random, hilarious stories, this one centered around the theme of how she deals with things like chronic illness and anxiety disorder. As a totally cool member of the “sometimes I need Xanax to make doing everyday things seem even remotely possible” club, I related to a LOT of her struggles. Jenny shares her stories with both insight and hilarity. If you’re a fan of her blog, you’ll most likely dig her book, too.

Murder Over a Girl: Justice, Gender and Junior High by Ken Corbett

This is a heavy book. It not only covers the murder trial in which one 8th grader killed another, but also dives into societal views of gender expression, and how accepted ideas like “boys will be boys!” can be dangerous. In 2008, a 14 year old boy shot his classmate, who had recently begun wearing makeup and jewelry to school and going by a new (female) name. Somehow, a fairly large number of people saw the victim’s behavior as “deviant” and the shooter as “a normal boy”. The author is a psychologist with a background in studying gender, particularly in how boys are viewed and shaped by the expectations placed upon them.

Spoiler alert: this book is heartbreaking to read. About halfway through, I googled the names of the kids and was blown away by just how young they were. It’s one thing to read about 14 year olds, but another to put faces to the story.

larry-king-leticia

If you nerd out over true crime like Serial, you might be into reading about this case. While there’s no real “mystery” to solve, the book does cover the debate about whether it should be classified as a hate crime, if the ruling should be first degree murder or manslaughter, etc etc. Saying that I “enjoyed” the book seems like the wrong word to use, so maybe I’ll just call it engrossing instead?

(I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.)

Riding Home: The Power of Horses to Heal by Tim Hays

If you’ve been keeping up with my blog over the past couple of months, you know that I just started riding horses again after a 10+ year break, and that it has basically been the best antidepressant ever. Riding Home discusses how riding and working with horses is used for therapeutic purposes, working wonders for people with everything from PTSD to autism. I’ve always wanted to get involved volunteering for a therapeutic riding program, but I’m mostly familiar with it for physical rather than mental or emotional problems. (One little girl at the stable where I take lessons was able to avoid a surgery for her spina bifida thanks to improvements brought about by riding!)

I found a lot of info in the book to be totally fascinating, such as the story of a little girl with autism who loved the discovery that you can tell where a horse is looking by which direction its ears are pointing, because it was the first time she was ever able to distinguish if someone was paying attention to her. Also, given how much time I spend working with rescue horses to achieve what can feel like very slow progress, I was blown away to learn that the equestrians at the famous Spanish Riding School in Austria have to spend FOUR YEARS establishing their relationship with their horse on the ground before they’re ever allowed on its back. That’s partnership, yo. I definitely recommend this one to my fellow horse nerds, or anyone interested in therapeutic riding programs!

That’s it for me for this month! Be sure to head over to Life According to Steph and Jana Says to check out the other participants in the Show Us Your Books linkup! An speaking of books, don’t miss the giveaway I just posted where you can win gorgeous adult coloring book!

Coloring Mandalas – Adult Coloring Book Giveaway (Ends 4/26) Rain Rain Go Away Giveaway Hop

Are you guys as addicted to the trend of coloring books for adults as I am? I love when I can chill in front of the TV and color for an hour or so at the end of a long day!

It’s kinda meditative to focus on coloring the patterns!

I came across artist Wendy Piersall’s series of coloring books for adults when I was searching for info on the best colored pencils for coloring books. (Her “how to color” blog post has great reviews of pencils and markers for coloring!) I instantly fell in love with the style of her designs, and couldn’t wait to give her books a try! So far, she has released 4 different adult coloring books: Coloring Dream MandalasColoring Flower Mandalas, Coloring Ocean Mandalas, and Coloring Animal Mandalas. (Those are Amazon affiliate links, btw. If you happen to make a purchase through them, I will make enough commission to pay for a can of cat food or something equally cool. Wooooohooo!)

The drawings in all four books are gorgeous – there’s plenty of detail to color, and plenty of variety within each book. Her Coloring Flower Mandalas adult coloring book has even been featured on the Huffington Post! The publisher was kind enough to send me all four coloring books to review, and I get to share the love and give one of my readers the chance to win their favorite!

Let’s take a look inside, shall we?

All four of these coloring books are printed on nice quality paper with designs on just one side of the sheet so you don’t have to worry about colors bleeding through. They’re about 9 by 7 inches in size with 30 designs to color per book.

You can find all of these awesome coloring books on Amazon via the links below. I definitely suggest checking them out to see the photos posted by other reviewers – you’ll not only get a better look at the designs inside, but you also get to see how different people have colored the images. There are some amazing ones in there! (All four books have solid 4.5 or 5 star ratings from reviewers, too!)

Barn Weekend

Barn Weekend

Happy Monday! I hope you guys are reading this in a sugary Cadbury egg hangover, or at least with dye-stained fingertips. My weekend was a little less than festive, but still pretty interesting!

Friday night was the Springfield horse auction, so I drove up to the rescue barn I work at in the early afternoon for some quality pre-auction horse cuddling time. I was hoping to find a cheap saddle at the auction (I sold both of mine for rent money while I was living in Florida. It was heartbreaking.), and we also planned to keep an eye out for horses nobody wanted that we could buy cheap and keep them from going to what I like to refer to as “the bad place.” Seriously, guys – most of the horses that end up going to kill buyers just need someone who can give them time, attention, and kindness. A good example?
freckles-barn

This is Freckles, sometimes referred to as Princess because she’s basically the pretty little princess of the barn. She’s 3 years old and is just learning how to do all of that “being a horse” stuff like moving forward when I ask and stopping when she hears “whoa”. I was her 4th and 5th ride ever, and I was super surprised by how chill she was about the whole thing. She was totally calm about having a person on her back, and tried her best to understand what I was asking from her.

freckles-appaloosa

Freckles arrived at the barn just a couple of weeks before I started working there. Apparently her previous owner had drug her into the auction ring, said “This bitch has 30 minutes to live”, and just walked out. My barn’s owner bought her, brought her home, and started working with her. We’re taking it slow with her because she’s still young and growing, and because the owner intends to keep her as one of his personal horses, so there’s no rush.

So many horses just get thrown away because their owners either don’t take the time to teach them how to be good horses, or just don’t care. We obviously can’t save them all, but it’s pretty awesome when we can.

So back to auction night, after that really long tangent! We got there around 5 pm and wandered around the area in the back that was filled with horses waiting to be sold later that night. I only fell in love like 43 times, no big deal. One of my favorites was this little pony that looked like a mini Gambit! (The horse I usually ride for lessons).

Regular Sized Gambit, for comparison.

You guys, the auction went on FOR. EVER. They sell small tack and other equipment first, then saddles, then horses. I was really hoping to get a cheap saddle since the one I use for lessons is also used by a bunch of kids, so I’m always having to adjust my stirrups back to my length, and also life is just better with your own saddle and I want one so gimmie gimmie. 😉 Since I live in the middle of nowhere Missouri, almost nobody rides English so you can usually get those saddles for SUPER cheap – like $20-30. I grew up riding all different disciplines, so I’ll just take whatever saddle is cheapest, thanks. I had my eye on a decent looking jumping saddle, but I went outside for a while to see if any new horses had arrived and totally missed it being sold. FAIL. And all of the western saddles that I liked *started* at $125, which wasn’t gonna work since I had like $50 in my purse. (I am so poor right now, you guys, horsies be expensive.)

They FINALLY started selling horses a little after 10 p.m., and that went on until a little after 1 a.m. No new horses for my barn this time, but I was blown away by how cheap most of them went! There was a gorgeous 3 yr old registered paint gelding that I adored when I was browsing outside. I expected him to go for at least $1500-2000, but he sold for like $800. Most of the Missouri Fox Trotters sold for like $400-600. CRAZY! Good thing I don’t have any money, or I’d have spent it all on horses.

By the time we were actually leaving at like 1:30, I had ZERO desire to make the 90 minute drive home, and then get back up a few hours later and drive 90 min BACK to the barn, so I just stayed there. Yep, I slept on a hay-stuffed sleeping bag, covered by another sleeping bag, and it was glorious because it meant that a) I did not have to drive, and b) I got to go outside and cuddle on my favorite horse, Doc, the moment I woke up on Saturday.

doc-stall

Doc suggests always carrying a snack in your hair just in case you get hungry later.

The rest of my barn time was spent doing super important things like…

ace-self1 ace-self2

ace-self4 ace-self3

Teaching Ace to take selfies.

ace-hat1 ace-hat2 ace-hat3

Watching Ace learn that if he freaks out about having his ears touched, he’s in for something way worse

car-stuff

Searching the giant piles of stuff that have accumulated in my car for something to wear on Saturday, finding only a sweatshirt that made me way too hot.

Nala-grooming

Grooming Nala 437 times. (Those big brown blobs all over the barn floor? NALA FUR. She’s got the thickest coat and is shedding like crazy!)

I watched the little paint mare that’s at the stable for training get worked in the roundpen for about 2 hours, and then took a break in the barn before what was supposed to be my first time working with Ace. Unfortunately, while I was chilling, the annoying headache I’d had all morning turned into one of those “OMG, sound and light and heat and the general existence of the planet are THE WORST and so painful!” headaches that I usually only get before I spend 2 days throwing up and/or in the ER. I took one of my super fancy headache pills and tried to get it to go away (including doing yoga in the barn, the highlight of which was being joined in doing Downward Dog by barn dog Beau.) but after about an hour I could tell I was out of luck, so I set off for home. Good idea in theory…

Remember how I live like 90 minutes from my barn? I made it about 10 miles before the super fancy headache pill kicked in, and I knew it was nap time RIGHT NOW. I made it to the library, parked, and basically face planted into the pillow I had in my front seat. My phone woke me up about half an hour later, and I was pretty happy to notice that the headache was way better. I started driving home again, made it less than 10 miles and LOLNOPE – nap time again! I parked at a Wal-Mart this time, set my phone alarm for 45 minutes, and hoped nobody would think I was dead. 2nd nap did the trick and I made it the rest of the way home safely (Whew!) where I took my other super fancy pills and went back to bed.

I slept until like 8:30 pm on Sunday (oops?), and then basically just laid around reading The Bloggess’s “Furiously Happy” book, which I finally got from the library after being on the waiting list forever. Happy Easter, I guess?

I’m glad that I got quite a bit of horse time over the weekend, bummed that I never got to work with Ace, seriously annoyed that my body is still pulling its random “let’s make you feel like you’re going to die now!” BS, and delighted that I got Cadbury Eggs for half price today. (Nope, it hasn’t been a very productive Monday!)

I’m planning to go ride the “Golden Girls” – Capri & Sunny at the barn where I take lessons tomorrow, weather and stupid rebelling body permitting. I’ve never ridden Sunny, so I’m excited to see how that goes!

Hope your weekend contained fewer evil headaches, but at least an equal number of adorable horses in hats!
